Membership in the DAR honors and preserves the legacy of your patriot ancestor. A patriot (male or female) is one who served the cause between April 19, 1775 (Battle of Lexington), and November 26, 1778.
The following are just a few examples of patriotic service that qualifies an ancestor:
- Signers of the Declaration of Independence
- Military Service (Continental Army, Navy or other military service)
- State or Local Militia
- Civil Service
- State Officials
- County and Town Officials (Town Clerk, Selectman, Juror, Judge, Sheriff, etc)
- Signers of Oath of Fidelity and Support, Oath of Allegiance, etc
- Members of the Boston Tea Party
- Defenders of the frontier
- Doctors, nurses, and other rendering aid to the wounded (other than family members)
- Those who rendered material aid, such as supplies, with or without remuneration
Membership in the NSDAR is through a local chapter or as a Member-At-Large. No chapter may discriminate against an applicant on basis of race or creed. Any woman is eligible for membership who is no less than eighteen years of age and can prove linal (blood line) descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence.
